For the past 11 months, I’ve been listening to The Sound of Young America podcasts. Today, I finally made my way to the end of their back-catalog of archived episodes. That’s 256 episodes in 11 months. Assuming 30 minutes per episode that’s more than 128 hours, and that’s a pretty conservative estimate since many of their episodes are an hour or more.

I’m shocked that I spend that much time in my car. Work is all of 5 minutes away from home (15 if I’m walking), so where have I been doing all that driving?

I should probably flip Jesse a few bucks for the entertainment and then get started on the back-catalog of This American Life episodes that have been accumulating on my iPod.

John Hodgman’s talk at TED, A brief digression on matters of lost time, is brilliantly funny. I didn’t even realize it until I had watched the video, but I have got to find myself a young, female Dune fan who will abduct me and fly me away to a sex pyramid.

Holy Hell!!!

Jump ahead to 2:30 in this skateboard video. That is crazy.

Grand Avenue Festival

The art community downtown put on a street festival today. I headed down there to check it out and take some photos. The festival web site said they were expecting 30,000 people I don’t think they came even close to that, but it was still a good time.

After I watched the debate tonight (great night, can’t wait to see the polls coming out of that), I got on my exercise bike and watched the new Knight Rider show.

I was watching it as a lark since the movie from earlier in the year was so dumb, and I’d heard that the new show is equally dumb. Man, was I ever surprised to find that it is a really fun show. Sure, it’s got plenty of dopey moments, but unlike say Fringe, which is stupid dopey, Knight Rider is awesomely fun dopey.

I’m sure it will be canceled within a few episodes, but give this show a chance if you like that kind of thing.

Update: I take it all back. The second episode blows.

I found myself very taken by the photographs (NSFW) of Gregory Crewdson. I’ve always been drawn to images of isolation and quiet contemplation. In these particular photos, there seems to be an undercurrent of pain and loneliness that I don’t care for as much, but broadly, I am very interested in his work.

Chinatown in Downtown Los Angeles put on a harvest moon festival with contortionists, martial artists, acrobats, moon cakes and even some telescopes to take a closer look at the moon. I took my camera.

So, my phone line is on the fritz. I head to the AT&T site and try to report a problem. The site sends me in circles. I decide I’m going to have to call them and try to report the problem. They say that they can send a repair tech out. If the problem is on their end, there’s no charge. If the problem is on my end, there’s a $55 charge just to tell me, and then I’d still need to pay them or somebody else to repair the problem. They can’t tell me if the problem is mine or theirs. That $55 is a gamble you have to take.

I’m more inclined to just dump the service entirely. I very rarely need a phone anyway, and there’s the mobile I keep in my glovebox on the are rare instance that I do need it. AT&T doesn’t care about that. There’s nothing they can do, and they’d be sorry to lose me as a customer over that ridiculous chance that they may need to charge me. This company deserves to go out of business. Their approach to service is insane.

Chalk Art at Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach was hosting a chalk art festival, so I headed down there with my camera to take some pictures of the sidewalk art. It was mostly kids, so the art was mostly lousy, but there were a few nice pieces and a band and plenty of beach sunshine.

I’ve linked to something like The Personal MBA Recommended Reading List in the past. This blog post connected some dots for me though by mentioning that people get together to discuss the books. Sort of a book club/development group. I like that. I may need to find some like minded professionals in LA (westside/south bay) to do that with me. I’m sure I’d get more out of it than just reading the books on my own. Let me know if you’re interested in something like that.
