Soapbox Derby

I headed downtown to check out the soapbox derby. It was CRAZY crowded. I heard one estimate of 100,000 people, and I’d bet good money that about 90 percent of them were all within about 1 square foot of where I was. There were plenty of crazy cars and costumes to make pictures of.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

I took a drive through Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks making pictures of soaring vistas, tall trees, playful wildlife and deep, dark caves.

Blessing of the Animals

I headed over to Olvera Street today to photograph the annual Blessing of the Animals. There were a lot of little animals in a lot of little costumes. The procession went on for over an hour.

Kite Festival

Redondo Beach put on a kite festival, so I went to make some photographs of kites. It was kind of interesting seeing all of the different kinds and colors of kites.

Getty Villa Art Festival

The Getty Villa put on some kind of Greek family festival today. I went because a group called The Boxtales was going to be reenacting stories from Homer’s Odyssey. They were surprisingly good, and now I’m thinking I want to try to see one of their longer “adult” shows.

I also went because the Getty Villa is gorgeous, so naturally I took a bunch of photos.

Spiders

I went to check out a bunch of spiders at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. I was hoping there’d be a bit more variety/color, and I kind of wish I hadn’t just sold my macro lens, but you can see a few spider pictures. It was kind of a fun Halloween type of thing to do.

Grand Avenue Festival

The art community downtown put on a street festival today. I headed down there to check it out and take some photos. The festival web site said they were expecting 30,000 people I don’t think they came even close to that, but it was still a good time.

Harvest Moon Festival in Chinatown

Chinatown in Downtown Los Angeles put on a harvest moon festival with contortionists, martial artists, acrobats, moon cakes and even some telescopes to take a closer look at the moon. I took my camera.

Chalk Art at Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach was hosting a chalk art festival, so I headed down there with my camera to take some pictures of the sidewalk art. It was mostly kids, so the art was mostly lousy, but there were a few nice pieces and a band and plenty of beach sunshine.
