Not the King Lear I Remembered

I went through a phase in college where I read a lot of Shakespeare’s plays. I always thought that Lear was one of my favorites, but I’d never seen it performed. I just watched the ’71 movie with Paul Scofield, and found the whole thing surprisingly slow and overly arty (to say nothing of overly shouty). Was it the performance? Was I a different person in college (obviously yes, but you know)? Does it read better than it plays? I don’t know. I’m sort of disappointed now.

Getty Villa Art Festival

The Getty Villa put on some kind of Greek family festival today. I went because a group called The Boxtales was going to be reenacting stories from Homer’s Odyssey. They were surprisingly good, and now I’m thinking I want to try to see one of their longer “adult” shows.

I also went because the Getty Villa is gorgeous, so naturally I took a bunch of photos.

That’s a Lot of Young America

For the past 11 months, I’ve been listening to The Sound of Young America podcasts. Today, I finally made my way to the end of their back-catalog of archived episodes. That’s 256 episodes in 11 months. Assuming 30 minutes per episode that’s more than 128 hours, and that’s a pretty conservative estimate since many of their episodes are an hour or more.

I’m shocked that I spend that much time in my car. Work is all of 5 minutes away from home (15 if I’m walking), so where have I been doing all that driving?

I should probably flip Jesse a few bucks for the entertainment and then get started on the back-catalog of This American Life episodes that have been accumulating on my iPod.

Things I Learned Today: There’s a lot of ambiguity when Hamlet tells Ophelia to “get thee to a nunnery” because a nunnery was both a convent (which is how I read it) and a brothel. I had no idea.

Man, I don’t get this Donald Duck cartoon. I mean it’s pretty clear that it’s supposed to be anti-German during world war II, but it seems like they passed up a lot of opportunities for jokes in favor of play up the drudgery of working in a German factory. Is that really the best propaganda they had to work with? It seems kind of lame.
