Not the King Lear I Remembered

I went through a phase in college where I read a lot of Shakespeare’s plays. I always thought that Lear was one of my favorites, but I’d never seen it performed. I just watched the ’71 movie with Paul Scofield, and found the whole thing surprisingly slow and overly arty (to say nothing of overly shouty). Was it the performance? Was I a different person in college (obviously yes, but you know)? Does it read better than it plays? I don’t know. I’m sort of disappointed now.

Soapbox Derby

I headed downtown to check out the soapbox derby. It was CRAZY crowded. I heard one estimate of 100,000 people, and I’d bet good money that about 90 percent of them were all within about 1 square foot of where I was. There were plenty of crazy cars and costumes to make pictures of.

Finally saw Elvis in concert. Finally saw a concert at the Greek. That crosses two off my life list.

It was a fun show, but a very weird encore. It seems like the encore may have been longer than the show itself with a few song choices that seemed to kill the show’s momentum. It was good though. I should have ponied up for the better seats. The Greek is a small venue, but even still, I could barely see the stage, and the TV monitors didn’t do much to help. An extra $50 would have gone a long way, and in the scheme of things, what’s $50?

The Once and Future … Wait, What?!

I’m 20 minutes into NBC’s new Merlin series, and WOW have they taken some strange liberties with the story. I’m trying to get past it. The story is the teller’s to tell, and if they want to mix it up, that could be interesting. Still, if you’re going to scramble the mythology that much, why not just change the names and start fresh? Anybody coming looking for King Aurthur won’t find it here, and who’s going to watch this other than somebody looking for King Aurthur? I hope it gets better or that I find a way to get past it and just pretend the names are a coincidence.

I Saw Tail Lights Last Night

I can’t seem to stop listening to “Great Expectations” by The Gaslight Anthem. I don’t know why. I mean it’s not horrible, but it’s not great by any stretch. From the corny fake record pops that a billion bands have done better (which isn’t saying much) to the forced lyrics, the whole thing feels kind of my first album. The drums are great though, and the energy is nice. Mostly, I think it’s just that the chorus must have one hell of a hook buried in it that works at some primitive level in my brain that refuses to let go.

Maybe if I listen to some of the Springsteen that clearly inspired the album I’ll be able to chase out the hero worship with the authentic.

Blessing of the Animals

I headed over to Olvera Street today to photograph the annual Blessing of the Animals. There were a lot of little animals in a lot of little costumes. The procession went on for over an hour.

Kite Festival

Redondo Beach put on a kite festival, so I went to make some photographs of kites. It was kind of interesting seeing all of the different kinds and colors of kites.
