Nothing More Scary

No, FoxTrot cartoon guy, since you asked, I can not think of anything more scary (or depressing for that matter) than your costume.

On the Edge of Blade Runner is a fantastic documentary about the making of one of my favorite movies. I hear that there’s an Ultimate Blade Runner DVD box set coming out in 2007 that will include four different versions of the film. So, I guess I’m going to have to buy something like my fourth of fifth version of that movie next year.

I’ve been meaning to get back downtown with my camera for a while now. Today, I finally went.
I’m not exactly thrilled with these photos. They don’t really capture the flavor of everything I saw today. Most of the really interesting things were inside, and there wasn’t enough light, or there was too much backlight coming through windows to really do those locations justice.

I finally managed to get a good rip of “Don’t Tell a Soul” by The Replacements. I had this on CD and played the hell out of it, but when I went to rip all my old music it was damaged or something, so the songs had a lot of speaker breaking, ear splitting, white noise.
I know that music fans who care about this stuff think that “Don’t Tell a Soul” is one of the weaker Replacements albums, but I always loved it — proving yet again that my musical taste pretty much sucks. It’s finally on my iPod now though. So Happy!!!!

Album Cover Wars is a fun animation that sees classic album covers from years past fighting to the death in an all out battle royal. The animation is a little sketch. Sometimes it’s sort of hard to see what’s happening. It’s still really great though, if only because it reminds me of a time when classic albums had classic covers. These days, I never even see the covers of the music I listen to.

This story about Steve Wozniak getting a visit from Secret Service for passing out $2 bills that are torn off a perforated sheet is fantastic.
God I love Woz. I can’t believe he passed the secret service agent a fake ID.

How to Run a Meeting Like Google features some great ideas for running meetings. I particularly like the idea of projecting a ticking stop watch. I wonder if people actually pay any attention to it.

I lean towards thinking it’s probably snake oil myself (things that sound too good to be true usually are, and conservation of momentum seems too real to get past), but the Electromagnetic Drive that Roger Shawyer claims to have developed still sounds really cool. It would be great if it was real — even though it almost certainly isn’t.

I gotta say, I’ve never considered bar codes unattractive. Actually, I never considered them at all, but somebody has, and they’ve figured out you can design them to look interesting. I’m still not very concerned about standard bar codes, but design bar codes are pretty cool.

Noah has been taking a picture of himself every day for six years. You can see a video of it here. I started looking at his face, but it’s surprising how little it changes, so eventually, I was just looking at the hair, which I found to be sort of hypnotic.
