A Not So Epic Future

I don’t buy most of what they’re talking about in EPIC 2014. I mean, I don’t even buy most of their analysis of the history much less their projections into the future. I guess time will tell. It was semi-interesting though which is more than I can say for most of what I’ve seen on the Internet in the past few weeks.

How to Learn a Language

Just setting an anchor for this Kuro5shin story about How to Learn a Language

Shocked and Shocked Again

According to the NYT’s article, What Wal-Mart Knows About Customers’ Habits:

By its own count, Wal-Mart has 460 terabytes of data stored on Teradata mainframes, made by NCR, at its Bentonville headquarters. To put that in perspective, the Internet has less than half as much data, according to experts.

I am shocked to learn that WalMart has so much sales data and shocked to learn that the internet has so little data. I can’t help wondering if the reporter was wrong about one or both of those factoids. I also can’t help dreaming about having all that lovely data to paw through.

Update: Hah! Just as I thought, the Internet Archive alone has Over a Petabyte of data.

With the sun going down so early these days, I felt like I really wanted to get out an enjoy it on the weekend while I could.

With that goal in mind, I headed up to Malibu Creek State Park for a hike to Century Lake. That’s a really nice hike. There’s a lot of variety in the scenery and it makes for sort of a leisurely stroll. I was going to power through to check out the old MASH set, but it was getting late, and I was getting tired so I bailed about a mile from the place. Maybe next time.

One thing — I think I need to get some density filters for my camera. Everywhere I tried to point my camera, the highlights were so hot, I couldn’t help blowing out most of them. That seems to happen whenever I go hiking. I think it must be all the shadows and light colored rocks.

Anyway, the pictures don’t really do the place justice, but here they are all the same.

Test

This is just a test.

The blood and gore and dead animal images are a bit disturbing, but some of these pictures are completely arresting. I love the stuffed bear with the exposed brains. Not sure what that says about me, but there you go.

So Let It Be Written

Well, I guess a country gets the government it deserves. It’s a shame though because I for one deserve much better.

I hope you enjoy the impending interest rate hikes and hyper inflation America. Not that the other guy would have done much more to stop it, but still, better to inch ever so slowly away from a cliff than to run forward and leap off it.

Perhaps if we’re all lucky, we’ll be able to get that promised national sales tax passed (not likely I know, but maybe if we all pray real hard). Then you can enjoy the ultimate middle class squeeze play trifecta.

Either way, I suspect that all you good, moral folks with the maximally leveraged adjustable rate mortgages are going to lose your homes. Sorry about that, but you have to expect a few broken eggs when you’re rushing towards the fall of an empire.

I guess a lot of you can find solace in the fact that you’re free to go on hating all those loving, committed couples. Those loving, loving people. What perverts! Oh, even the thought if it is just so horrible isn’t it? I swear, if there is a Jesus, he must weep tears of blood when he sees how you let Paul and all the hate mongers that came after him pervert such a beautiful message of love and forgiveness.

Update: Man, Nader actually ended up getting about 100,000 more votes than Badnarik. That’s perhaps the saddest thing of all. I was expecting a minor protest vote from fiscal conservatives to go Badnarik’s way. I guess there just aren’t any real Republicans left anymore.
