Shocked and Shocked Again

According to the NYT’s article, What Wal-Mart Knows About Customers’ Habits:

By its own count, Wal-Mart has 460 terabytes of data stored on Teradata mainframes, made by NCR, at its Bentonville headquarters. To put that in perspective, the Internet has less than half as much data, according to experts.

I am shocked to learn that WalMart has so much sales data and shocked to learn that the internet has so little data. I can’t help wondering if the reporter was wrong about one or both of those factoids. I also can’t help dreaming about having all that lovely data to paw through.

Update: Hah! Just as I thought, the Internet Archive alone has Over a Petabyte of data.
