Light Moves Pretty Fast
March 2nd, 2004 by Will
Tonight, storm clouds were threatening in this sort of cool ominous way, but it was still pretty light out, so I decided to go for quick a walk. After about one lap around the block, everything was lit with this moody, kind of interesting light. I thought about grabbing my camera and shooting a few things, but I figured I needed the exercise more than I needed the photos.
Also, it was starting to rain a little with these big heavy drops. I briefly considered giving up on the walk — particularly since the rain started right when I was at the gate that I would have gone in through. It was sort of a sparse kind of sprinkle though, so I figured what the heck. I kept walking.
About 3/4 of the way through lap two, the sky was unbelievable. I’m completely serious. It was absolutely surreal with these dark purple storm clouds picking up red and orange highlights along the clouds’ under-edges from the sunset. Despite the heavy, dark clouds over head, the sky to the west was perfectly clear with this crystal blue color. This sky was the most alien thing I think I’ve ever seen, and as I was rounding a corner, I saw these over-turned shopping carts that seemed to be glowing with light. It would have made one of the greatest photos I’ve ever taken. So, I hurried up to finish the remaining 1/4 of lap two. I got my camera, and I hurried back to snap off a few shots.
All of that couldn’t have taken more than five, maybe six minutes tops. By the time I got there though, the character of the light had completely changed. It had become just a sort of boring, overly dark sunset. I snapped a couple of shots anyway, but they aren’t even worth posting.
I was so disappointed, I didn’t even consider taking my fourth, customary lap around the block. Light and time just move too fast. They slip away when you aren’t even looking. I hate losing them like that.
