Phreak Me Baby

I was talking to some people over the weekend about phone phreaking (early hackers who explored the phone system and figured out how to make free calls, etc.). I mentioned Cap’n Crunch about whom I’d heard, but knew very little. I got interested, so I did a bit of searching and came across a page of his personal stories.

It’s fascinating reading. It makes me wish I was there back in the day (except I’m sure that back in the day I wouldn’t have even known what was going on)

Fading Ad Campaign

Frank Jump has an interesting project photographing vintage advertising murals.

Fading Ad Campaign is a photographic project documenting vintage mural ads on building brickfaces in New York City spanning nearly a century. It has become a metaphor for survival for me since, like myself, many of these ads have long outlived their expected life span. Although this project doesn’t deal directly with HIV/AIDS, it is no accident I’ve chosen to document such a transitory and evanescent subject. Of the hundreds of ads I’ve photographed, many have already been covered up, vandalized, or destroyed. But still many silently cling to the walls of buildings, barely noticed by the rushing passersby.

Shake Your Grove Thing…

What can you possibly say about Stealth Disco? I laughed, I cried, I got down with my bad self*

Thanks for the point MeFi.

*Disclaimer - all statements are hyperbole. In point of fact, I did not laugh or cry or get down with my self bad or otherwise. I did maybe chuckle a bit though, and isn’t that really the most you could possible ask from something so fundamentally inane?

The Doll Photo that Steven Frank found is spectacular. It’s almost enough to make me want to start collecting dolls — or more likely to start visiting his Disturbing Auctions Daily site on a regular basis.

Money Isn’t Everything

Turns out there are over 47 million people who make more than I do. Man, and I was feeling so good after balancing all of my accounts this weekend and seeing actual growth in my 401K plan after years of attrition.

Well, on the bright site, there are close to 6 billion people making less than me, so I guess I’m not doing too bad.

ASCII Movies

Wow. Somebody must have a lot of time on their hands.

Thanks BoingBoing.

Strip Tetris

Nudity and Tetris - It’s everything an obsessive compulsive, internet perv could possibly want. Except the flash controls are a bit clunky. I keep expecting the pieces to turn the other way for some reason. Plus the stripping turns out to be way less interesting than you might hope.

Oh well. Needless to say you shouldn’t play it at work — unless of course you work at Fredericks of Hollywood or something.
