I wish all antihistamine sellers would print the recommended dosage on the back of each of their little gel packs. I always seem to end up with little pills in my desk and no box to tell me whether I should take one or two.
I took two. Hey, I’m an American. More is better.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee

I was hoping I was going to like Rob Lowe’s new show, The Lyon’s Den. For entirely baseless reasons, I was hoping it would be as smartly written as West Wing. But, it’s just a silly soap opera.
Are there any good new shows this season?

If you have a chance, you should go out of your way to check out the movie, My Life Without Me. I think it may well be the best movie I’ve seen so far this year.
It’s pretty sad, so if you’re the type to cry at the movies, you may want to take some tissues. I’d make a joke here about needing tissues because of the always beautiful star Sarah Polley, but the movie deserves better than that.

Wow! The US version of Coupling is horrible.
H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E.!!!!!
I knew it would suck, but I had no idea it could possibly be so stilted and unfunny. The weird thing is, most of the script seems to be taken straight from the UK version. Same jokes, but really just way less funny than the original. I don’t understand how they did it. They sucked the funny right out of it.

So, I was watching The Screensavers (I know, but what can I do? I’m just a big ol’ geek). Anyway, they did a segment on the Slimp3.
I’ve looked at all those things, but never had any interest. Thing is — they have a software client that can be used without buying the hardware. Cool!!!! I tried it out, and it really very well done, and very simple to set up and use.
Now, here’s my question. Does anybody know how to open up my home router so that I can access the served files from the internet (outside my network)?
The router is a D-Link DI-713P. I went to Advanced > Virtual Server and enabled service port 9000 for server IP 192.168.0.122. The Slimp3 broadcasts on port 9000, and 122 is the internal address of the machine that is acting as the Slimp3 server.
I then tried to go to http://192.168.0.122@[external IP]:9000, but connection fails. Since I’m not 100 percent sure of the syntax (or even 10 percent sure of the syntax), I also tried 192.168.0.122:9000@[external IP] and 192.168.0.122:9000@[external IP]:9000
Nothing.
That’s maybe not surprising since Shields Up reports that port 9000 is stealthed.
So, I went to Advanced > Packet Filter > Inbound Filter and explicitly allowed traffic coming into port 9000 with the 192.168.0.122 as a destination IP. Still no joy.
Has anybody done this? Does anybody know how to do this? I’m sure it’s really quite simple, but when it comes to this stuff, sadly so am I.

Well, I gotta say, that’s not at all the way I remember Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. I’m afraid it suffers a bit for the adaptation. Still, better than some film versions I’ve tried to watch.
I wonder what Peter Kuper would do with In a Penal Colony (my favorite and by far the MOST disturbing of Kafka’s most disturbing inventions).

Magnatune: Open, unencumbered MP3s let you try before you buy. Buy and you get the MP3 and a high quality wav file. Even better, buy and 50 percent goes straight to the artist.
I hope you’re paying attention RIAA member labels because these guys will get my money while you guys won’t. I just wish Magnatune had a better roster of artists. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

Dude’s Funny:
Fortunately, my wife is understanding. She put Post-It notes on all of our large cooking vessels. Each says, in large, clear letters, “Don’t boil the baby.” It confused my parents when they came over, so, when they asked about it, I said “What? Are you saying it’s a good idea to boil the baby?” Then they changed the subject really quickly, so I think everything is going to work out OK.

I was over on MetaFilter, and somebody had linked to this on-line writing workshop deal.
I was kind of interested since I’ve been feeling like I’ve been neglecting my creative writing. I like the motivating elements of having assignments and short time frames and peer critiques. However, when I backed up to the main site, I’m not so sure those are the people I want to have as my peers. Call me snobby, but I get the feeling they were the kids getting beat up in high school — like a lot.
The web though seems perfect for this kind of thing. So, I’m wondering if any of my 3 readers have been feeling a little creatively withered. If I can get at least 3 to 5 people who are into it, then I’d be willing to set up a community blog where we could all submit our work and get feedback from the group.
A while ago I tried setting up an on-line reading group. That didn’t go anywhere, but this seems like a better fit. Drop me a comment or send an e-mail to LetsWrite at this domain. That’s raleighnet.org in case you don’t know what site you’re on or don’t know what a domain is.
