Hey, I don’t remember that

It’s been so long since I’ve seen an unedited version of Animal House that when I got the DVD the other day, I was shocked to see a giant dildo gag in one of the first scenes. Giant Dildos in 1962? Well, OK, 1978, but still.

The movie is as funny and raunchy as you remember. Unfortunately, the hilarious “where are they now” mocumentary/bonus feature was not only NOT hilarious, it was so bad that it was painful to watch.

Oh, and Universal continues with there Bullshit of comandeering control of your DVD player so you can’t fastforward past their lame-ass previews. And these previews go on and on and on… I’m half tempted to return the damn disc as defective. Or, barring that, it makes me want to rip and pirate the disc just as a giant F You!!

On the other end of the spectrum (or maybe not), I went to see Thirteen the other day. I wanted to like this movie. I really did. And, it does have a few good moments. Unfortunately the nature of the drama and the motivation of the characters is so afterschool special, I spent more time rolling my eyes than anything else. I know there are kids out there who are dealing with all of those issues and more, but this particular take just didn’t feel real. That’s a real problem since they’re going for gritty realism. With gritty realism, any suggestion of over-the-top melodrama is like a stake through the heart of the film.
