The Matrix – Eh…

I finally got around to seeing the new Matrix today. So many people I know liked it. Matt for instance sure seemed to groove on it. I on the other hand was ready to nod off as soon as the thing started and it never quite lived up to my hopes and expectations (whatever those may have been).

Anyway, Spoilers Ahead:

I thought it was too long by a good 30 to 60 minutes. That whole deal with the French guy – get that right out of there. What was the point? A bunch of the fight/chase scenes would have been better had they been edited more. I get that, that’s kind of the whole point of the movie, but I never, ever felt any jeopardy for the characters.

Neo is basically indestructible, so there aren’t any villains to challenge him. The new villains spend their whole time fighting the less-super Morpheous and Trinity, and even there I didn’t feel it. Neo’s only challenge is can he go fast enough to save his friends — a device they use twice.

Plus, I mostly didn’t care about any of the characters on even the most basic level. When the ones who were supposed to be hacking the back-up power grid fall over dead, I didn’t spare one moment to care. Amazingly, the movie didn’t either. Neo’s conversation with the Oracle was satisfying, but his conversation with the Architect was a lot less than I would have liked it to have been. I don’t know what I wanted it to be, but not that.
