Big Yellow Taxi
November 16th, 2002 by Will
The first couple years that I was in California, I lived in Playa del Rey. It’s a quiet little beach community within spitting distance of Venice. A lot of times on the weekends, I would head into Venice to have a late breakfast at Van Gogh’s Ear. That’s this eclectic, kind of artsy dive of a restaurant. Great food, great atmosphere, just an all around great experience.
Well, today I had to drive up Santa Monica way, so I figured I’d make a day of it, hit Van Gogh’s Ear, walk along the beach, take some pictures. I’m so bummed. I think they may have torn down Van Gogh’s Ear and put up a parking garage.
I’m not 100% sure because it was always kind of tough to spot, and today, I drove past before I even knew I was on top of it. Still, it sure seems to be gone. I’ve been in California less than 8 years, and they’re already tearing down my heritage. Joni Mitchel was right what with the paradise, and the paving and the parking lot. I better hit the Apple Pan tomorrow before it’s too late (local burger joint, I’ve never been, but hear it is the can’t miss must experience spot of all California spots).
Anyway, here are the pictures I took. At least Santa Monica is still there. If anybody knows of any spots like Van Gogh’s Ear in the South Bay (LA) area, please let me know.

Speaking of “Big Yellow Taxi,” have you heard the Counting Crows version? So much worse than bad - there are no words to describe.
van gogh’s ear recently went out of business, but the building is still there, definitely NOT torn down. what was torn down on the next block is the roger corman studios (where his cult and b movies were shot). they’re putting up some “artist lofts” in their place. that’s probably what you thought was a parking lot going up.
I loved Van Gogh’s Ear, as well. I used to go when I was in college - but, when I came home for a visit a few years ago I couldn’t find it either. Now, I know what happened…sniff, sniff.
