Turn It Up Dude

I ordered a set of Altec Lansing ATP3 flat-panel 3-piece speakers for my computer at work. I listen to MP3s at work a lot, and the positioning of my computer tends to place the sound more outside of my office than in making it louder for others as opposed to me. Plus, the speakers that come stock in the Macs are adequate, but a little cheezy sounding. more…

Sound placement on the ATP3s seems reasonably good. I really need to extend the wires so that I can actually position the speakers a little better. I’m not sure how to do that though since one of the speakers has a weird looking plug that’s keyed to the subwoofer. I think this is so it can carry volume, bass and treble information back to the main unit. It doesn’t look like the kind of thing I’ll probably find at Radio Shack. I’m thinking about moving the subwoofer up onto my desk. It seems crazy, but at low volumes the bass really falls out, and getting it up a little may help with that.

The wires are also hard wired into the speaker units which will make replacing defective wire a huge pain. In my experience, the wire fails more often than anything else, so that really sucks.

I actually thought I was ordering the Altec Lansing 2100s which I had heard in a local store and think sound a lot better. I’ve been thinking about putting a set of speakers in my bathroom so I could shower while listening to my iPod instead of burning MP3 CDs to play through a boombox. I may move these to my home, and pick up the 2100s for the office.

I also picked up a set of Altec Lansing 641s for home. My home office computer is where I really needed the sound help. I haven’t received these yet, but judging from the reviews, these look like the best choice if you want cost-effective medium to high volume sounds.
