Full Screen Versions

I can't believe what a goof I am. I bought the Beautiful Mind DVD over the weekend. I go to put in and come to find out it's the Full Screen (non letterboxed) version. Apparently they make a wide screen and full screen version, and I didn't even notice/think to check for the full screen version flag on the disc. I know it's my fault, but I blame the company that puts out the DVD. Why do they even make full screen DVDs? If you want a pan and scan version of your movie then just stick with renting tapes from blockbuster. You won't notice the difference anyway.

why do they even make full screen dvs?...because those of us who like to see the full movie deserve dvd quality too. i don't understand how people prefer wide screen. i have seen both wide screen and full screen version of movies and you ARE missing parts of the movie where those black bars are. they cut off the top and bottom parts of the picture.

I don't know about you, but I absolutely despise the format of wide screen on dvds! They say you are suppose to see more of the movie from sided to side, but it takes so much of the movie away! Nobody I know actually likes the wide screen format. We are all so used to seeing full screen. I hope they start making more dvd's in full screen with as good of quality as wide screen, because most of us still have square televisions, and not the wide screen televisions.

Full screen dvds are for people who have old 4x3 TV sets. Anyone who has the new 16x9 aspect ratio TVs would always want widescreen. A so-called full screen movie take up about the middle two thirds of my screen. So it isn't full screen for me.
The truth is over a a third of the movie image is lost when the movie is made "full screen".

ok look people, widescreen is great for those who have the new tvs specially formated for them or for those who can actually stand the black bars. But for us who have normal tvs (which is the majority) IT IS QUITE annoying to see the big ugly bars. and for those who dont understand how it works... widescreen dose not actuaaly cut the top parts of the movie out, and you do see more on the sides...how is this possible? well you're seeing the picture scrunched up (shrunk)nut you are not missing out. it is just annoying. to ease both pains for lovers of wide and full, there are wonderfull dvds where you have a choice and can just flip them over! more companies should do that instead of beautifying one side of the dvd and then everybody will be happy. i think its a money making scam! when the people with full dvds get the new tvs they will have to buy all there dvds again in wide to enjoy them!

Uh...(cut off the top and bottom parts of the
picture???) I DO hope you are kidding...

Widescreen format is the format the movie is
in when it comes out in the movie theater...
THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO BE, else you actually
MISS entire scenes that are on screen sides
in such movies as "Ghostbusters" when in so-
called "full screen", which should actually be
could "condensed postage stamp mode".

With "full screen", especially with regard to
such movies as "The Final Countdown", you are
only seeing about 1/5th of the screen, for
crying out loud! And how anyone could stand to
watch a scrunched up image for very long, it
makes my head hurt just thinking about it!

SHEESH!!! What is WRONG with people???

I haven't bothered responding to any of the people who prefer full screen because I figure let them be wrong, and they probably don't know how they got to this blog post anyway, and they probably won't ever be back to my site to see my reply. For new people who happen by though, you should read this Slate article, How Widescreen Won which discusses the reasons that letterboxed won out over full screen in the hearts and minds of most movie lovers.
